What is IV Hydration?
Intravenous hydration provides the fluid that the body needs when a person cannot take enough fluids by mouth.
What is the process?
Normal Saline is given from a bag connected to an intravenous line. The process takes about 45min to 1hr.
Are there any possible complications?
- Infection at the injection site
- A dislodged IV catheter or a collapsed vein. All of these are easily corrected or treated.
- Fluid Overload can cause symptoms such as headache, high blood pressure, anxiety or trouble breathing. Some overload can be tolerated if the patient is healthy. But if the patient has other health problems (ex CHF/kidney issues), it can be dangerous.
What should the patient watch out for?
- If the patient notices that the flow seems to be going too fast or too slow, ask the clinician to check the flow rate.
- Alert staff right away if symptoms of a headache or trouble breathing are experienced

Common side effects include:
Heartburn, upset stomach or nausea, and diarrhea.
Contact the doctor if you have:
Joint pain, weakness or tired feeling, weight loss, stomach pain, chills, fever, severe pain in the side or low back increased urge to urinate or painful or difficult urination, or blood in urine.
Emergency medical help is needed if the patient has:
Hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
